“ECI Breaks Tradition with Pre-Counting Press Conference, Opposition Seeks Transparency”

Must read

The Election Commission of India (ECI) will hold a press conference today, June 3, at 12.30 pm. This is one day before the votes for the Lok Sabha elections 2024 will be counted. It is unusual for the ECI to hold a press conference at the end of an election.

In the past, deputy election commissioners would talk to the media after each part of the election. But this practice has stopped since the 2019 elections.

The voting for the Lok Sabha elections started on April 19 and ended on June 1. It took place in seven phases. The votes will be counted starting at 8 am on Tuesday, June 4. The counting will continue until all the votes from the 543 areas have been counted.

Most exit polls say that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Narendra Modi, will win a big victory in the Lok Sabha elections 2024. They think the BJP will do even better than in 2019, when it won 352 seats. Some polls say the BJP and its allies (the NDA) will get more than 400 seats in the Lok Sabha.

Opposition leaders have asked the ECI to count the paper ballots first and announce those results before the results from the electronic voting machines (EVMs). They also want the ECI to check the date and time on the Control Units and confirm when voting started and ended. They want the ECI to give details to the people watching the counting process.

Abhishek Manu Singhvi, a senior Congress leader, said it is very important to count and announce the results of the postal ballots first. He said this is clearly stated in the rules.

The Opposition parties have told their people to watch the vote-counting process closely on Tuesday. They want to make sure they get form 17C, which shows how many votes were recorded at each polling station.
