The drug, which was priced at Rs 60 per tablet till now, will be available for only Rs 9 from March 11.
In fact, the patent of German pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim is going to expire on March 11. Along with this, Indian companies are ready to launch it under their brand. These include major pharmaceutical companies like Mankind Pharma, Torrent, Alkem, Dr. Reddy and Lupin. The special thing is that Mankind Pharma is preparing to sell this drug at a price 90 percent lower than the innovator company.
This drug is used in the treatment of diabetes and other related diseases like heart disease and chronic kidney disease. More than 10.1 crore people in India suffer from diabetes, and most of them bear the cost of medicine from their own pocket. In such a situation, this big drop in the price of the medicine will bring relief to the patients. According to experts, Empagliflozin is used to prevent heart failure, slow down kidney failure. However, due to its high price, it was accessible to only limited patients till now. Now that Indian companies are offering it at a low price, it will prove to be a boon for millions of people.
