SunRisers Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins won the coin toss and chose to bat first in the final match against Kolkata Knight Riders at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium. SunRisers had a very bad start when Mitchell Starc dismissed Abhishek Sharma for 2 runs in the first over itself. In the next over, Vaibhav Arora got Travis Head out for 0 runs, leaving SunRisers at 6/2 in less than 2 overs.
SunRisers could never recover from this early setback and kept losing wickets frequently. Even scoring 100 runs looked very difficult. However, some aggressive batting by captain Pat Cummins towards the end helped SunRisers reach a total of 113 runs before they were all out in 18.3 overs.
Kolkata’s bowlers did extremely well, with every bowler taking at least one wicket. Andre Russell was the best Kolkata bowler, taking 3 wickets while giving away just 19 runs. Mitchell Starc and Harshit Rana took 2 wickets each. Varun Chakravarthy, Sunil Narine and Vaibhav Arora got 1 wicket each.
When Kolkata batted, they also lost an early wicket when Pat Cummins dismissed Sunil Narine in the 2nd over. But then Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Venkatesh Iyer stabilized Kolkata’s innings and took the score past 100 runs.
Towards the end, Kolkata lost Gurbaz’s wicket at 39 runs. But captain Shreyas Iyer and Venkatesh Iyer ensured there were no further hiccups. Kolkata won their 3rd IPL trophy in the 11th over when Venkatesh Iyer scored a single off Shahbaz Ahmed’s ball.
