Lok Sabha Election 2024 Phase 5 Voting Updates – 20 May

Voting is happening today, 20 May, in 49 areas across 6 states and 2 union territories for phase 5 of the big Lok Sabha Elections 2024.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked women and young voters to vote in large numbers. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said a storm of change is coming across the country.

The voting started at 7 am in Uttar Pradesh (14 areas), Maharashtra (13), West Bengal (7), Bihar (5), Odisha (5), Jharkhand (3), and one area each in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh union territories.

Phase 5 has many important seats, with top ministers and leaders contesting. Voter turnout went up in phase 4 after dipping in first 3 phases.

Till 9 am, the 49 areas saw 10.28% voter turnout as per the Election Commission. West Bengal had highest 15%, followed by UP 12.89% and Jharkhand 11.68%.

Overall in 4 phases so far, 66.95% turnout happened according to the Election Commission on 16 May.

Key candidates include Rahul Gandhi (Rae Bareli, UP), Smriti Irani (Amethi, UP), Rajnath Singh (Lucknow, UP), others from Bihar, Maharashtra, J&K.

Over 8.95 crore voters including 4.69 crore men, 4.26 crore women and 5,409 third gender can vote today. 7.81 lakh are over 85 years old, 24,792 over 100 years.

Around 9.47 lakh officials deployed at 94,732 polling stations.

In 2019, BJP won 32 of these 49 seats, allies 7. Congress won just 1 – Raebareli. Overall NDA won 39, INDIA parties 8, BJD 2.

After phase 5, over 3/4th (428 of 543) Lok Sabha seats would have voted. Last 2 phases on 25 May and 1 June. Counting on 4 June.

BJP’s NDA aims 400+ seats this election. Challenged by Congress-led INDIA opposition bloc.
