Maharashtra Bandh update: MVA calls off today’s bandh, plans peaceful protest; transport services to remain unaffected

Must read

In a recent development, the Maharashtra Bandh planned for 24th August has been canceled by the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) after a directive from the Bombay High Court. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray announced the cancellation, stating that while they will not proceed with the bandh, they will continue their protest by wearing black armbands. He also expressed disagreement with the court’s verdict.

Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole stated that MVA leaders will now stage protests with black flags and bands from 11 am to noon on 24th August. The court had cautioned that the strike could greatly disrupt everyday activities. Opposition leaders and their supporters will now engage in peaceful demonstrations, wearing black bands around their mouths to voice their discontent over the reported sexual abuse case involving two kindergarten girls in Badlapur, Thane district.

The MVA, comprising Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress, and the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP), had initially called for a state-wide shutdown to highlight the Badlapur case. However, the Bombay High Court issued a statement opposing the bandh, noting that it could interfere with daily routines and lead to considerable economic disruption. The court further stressed that the proposed strike would interrupt several essential activities, potentially affecting the state’s industrial and economic sectors.

Meanwhile, public transport services, including buses and metros, will run as usual. Since the state government does not endorse the bandh, no local services will be impacted. Operations will proceed without major interruptions, ensuring smooth travel for commuters.
