Paris 2024: Manu Bhaker clinches bronze, becoming the first Indian woman to secure a shooting medal at the Olympics

Must read

Overall, this was India’s fifth Olympic medal in shooting and their first in any sport at Paris 2024. India had previously won shooting medals at three consecutive Olympics from Athens 2004 to London 2012 but failed to secure any in the following two editions.

The 22-year-old Manu Bhaker scored 221.7 to claim third place in the eight-woman final. Oh Ye Jin of South Korea won the gold medal with a new Olympic record of 243.2, followed by her compatriot Yeji Kim, who narrowly surpassed Bhaker to reach the gold medal round and secured silver with a final score of 241.3.

Manu Bhaker commenced the final with a strong showing, scoring 50.4 in the first series to take second place. However, a couple of 9.6s in the second series caused her to fall to third, trailing Oh Ye Jin and Yeji Kim.

The Indian shooter reclaimed second position from Yeji Kim at the end of the third series and once more in the closing stages, but the South Korean shooter narrowly overtook Bhaker by 0.1 point to move into the gold medal round.

“I concentrated on staying in the moment until the very end, never giving up, and constantly pushing harder,” Manu said. “You have to maintain your composure, because that’s what all the effort is for. Although the competition was fierce and I lost silver by .1, I’m still very thankful to win bronze for my country.”
