Rahul Gandhi to Appear in Court Over Defamation Case

Must read

Rahul Gandhi, a leader of the Congress party, will go to a special court in Bengaluru on Friday. This is related to a case filed against him by the Karnataka BJP. They said he put advertisements in newspapers that insulted them before the state elections last year.

The advertisement accused the previous BJP government in Karnataka of being involved in a lot of corruption during its rule from 2019 to 2023. On Thursday, the state Congress said “Congress national leader Rahul Gandhi will attend the court hearing at 10.30 am tomorrow (Friday).”

After that, he will meet with the newly elected Congress MPs and candidates who lost from Karnataka. This meeting will happen at 11.30 am at Bharat Jodo Bhavan. The new Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar will also be there.

About the case: On June 1, the Bengaluru court allowed bail to Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar when they came for the same case. The judge ordered Rahul Gandhi to come to court in person on June 7.

Last week, Rahul Gandhi’s lawyer asked if he could be excused from coming, but the complainant’s side opposed this. They said he should not get repeated exemptions.

In June 2023, the BJP filed a complaint. They said the accused made false claims in advertisements on May 5, 2023 in Karnataka newspapers during the election campaign. The ads were titled “Corruption rate card” and accused the government of taking 40% commission.

The complaint said these defamatory ads were published by the Karnataka Congress leaders Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah. It also mentioned that Rahul Gandhi had shared this “insulting advertisement” on his X (Twitter) account.
