Actor Rajpal Yadav surrendered at Tihar Jail on February 5, 2026. The Delhi High Court refused to give him more time in a long-running cheque bounce and loan default case.
The court ordered him to serve six months in jail because he did not follow the court’s directions several times. The case started in 2010 and is related to unpaid money. The amount later increased to around ₹9 crore after his film production project Ata Pata Laapata failed.
What started as a business loss many years ago slowly turned into a long court case. Even after getting several chances to settle the matter, the issue was not resolved, and now he has been sent to jail.
When Did It All Start?
According to PTI, the problem began in 2010. Rajpal Yadav took a loan of around ₹5 crore from M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd to make his first film as a director, Ata Pata Laapata.
But the film did not do well at the box office. Because of this, he suffered heavy financial losses and was unable to repay the money.
Money Increased to ₹9 Crore
Because the film did not earn much money, Rajpal Yadav could not repay the loan. Over time, interest and penalties were added, and the total amount increased to nearly ₹9 crore.
To repay the money, he gave several cheques to the company. But those cheques bounced (there was not enough money in the bank). After that, a criminal case was filed against him under the law related to cheque bounce cases.
In April 2018, a lower court found Rajpal Yadav and his wife guilty in several cheque bounce cases and gave him six months in jail. In 2019, a sessions court also agreed with this decision. After that, he appealed in the Delhi High Court.
Many Chances Given by Court
Usually, loan disputes are civil matters. But the Delhi High Court took the case seriously because Rajpal Yadav did not follow court promises many times.
Over the years, the court gave him many chances to pay the money in instalments. He made some payments and gave many promises, but he did not follow the full payment schedule.
The court said he had to pay ₹1.35 crore in each of the seven cases filed against him. The court also ordered that the money already deposited be given to the complainant.
In October 2025, he deposited two demand drafts of ₹75 lakh. But still, around ₹9 crore was left unpaid.
In June 2024, the High Court temporarily stopped his conviction and gave him another chance to settle the matter properly. Later, the court said that no serious effort was made to fully settle the case.
High Court Ordered Him to Surrender
On February 2, 2026, the Delhi High Court told Rajpal Yadav to surrender before jail authorities by 4 pm on February 4.
When he did not surrender on time, his lawyer asked for mercy, saying he was arranging money and reached Delhi late. But the court did not accept this request.
The judge clearly said that no special treatment can be given to anyone just because they belong to the film industry. The court said rules must be followed by everyone.
On February 5, 2026, Rajpal Yadav came to court and said he was ready to pay ₹25 lakh and follow a new payment plan. But the judge refused to cancel the surrender order.
Later that day, Rajpal Yadav surrendered at Tihar Jail and started serving his six-month jail sentence.
What Rajpal Yadav Said
Earlier, Rajpal Yadav said in an interview that he did not have the money to repay the loan. He said he felt helpless and did not see any other option.
He also said that he did not get much support from people in the film industry.
Film Industry Reaction
After he went to jail, some film personalities supported him.
Actor Sonu Sood said he would give Rajpal Yadav a role in his film along with a signing amount. Sonu Sood said this is not charity but a way to show respect and support during tough times.
He also said that when someone from the industry is facing problems, others should stand together and support them.
Filmmaker Anees Bazmee told NDTV that he has known Rajpal Yadav for the last 20–25 years. He said Rajpal never wanted to cheat anyone. He also said that many people in the film industry are not very strong in handling paperwork and legal matters.
Anees Bazmee said Rajpal is still working and earning slowly, but it is very difficult for him to pay such a big amount of money all at once.
He also said that the film industry is like one family, and everyone should help Rajpal according to their ability and support him in this difficult time.
Actor Gurmeet Choudhary also shared his feelings on X (Twitter). He said it is very painful to see such a senior and talented actor going through a tough time. He said Rajpal needs support right now.
Gurmeet added that the film industry is like a family, and family members should not leave each other in bad times.
On the work front, Rajpal Yadav was last seen in the films Baby John and Interrogation.
He will next be seen in Akshay Kumar’s horror-comedy film Bhoot Bangla, which is planned to release on April 10.
