“Tesla’s $2 Billion India Plans: Potential Reliance Partnership for EV Manufacturing”

Must read

A report claims that Tesla plans to invest $2 billion in India and has been considering multiple locations there.

The report suggests Tesla may be looking for an Indian partner to help set up operations in the country. The Hindu Business Line reported, citing unnamed sources, that Tesla is in talks with Reliance Industries about a possible joint venture to build a manufacturing facility in India.

What did the report say about Tesla and Reliance?

“Talks are at an early stage and have been going on for over a month,” said someone aware of the developments, according to the report. This doesn’t mean Reliance is entering the auto industry itself, but rather aimed at building capabilities for electric vehicles in India.

“While Reliance’s exact role is still unclear, it’s expected the Indian conglomerate may play a major part in establishing the manufacturing plant and related ecosystem for Tesla in India,” another source told the publication.

What are Tesla’s plans for India?

The report claimed Tesla has committed $2 billion to its upcoming plans in India and has scouted multiple locations, including Gujarat and Maharashtra, for setting up the plant. Maharashtra could be the preferred site as “Tesla plans to use the facility for domestic sales and exports, so it may prefer a location suitable for port access,” the report added.

This comes after Tesla CEO Elon Musk said, “India is now the world’s most populous country. India should have electric cars just like every other country. It’s a natural progression to offer Tesla electric vehicles in India.”

Will Tesla officials visit India soon?

Senior Tesla officials are expected to visit India within a month or so to finalize the plant location and the proposed joint venture with Reliance, the report stated.
