Zomato Backtracks on ‘Pure Veg’ Fleet, Maintains Red Uniform Policy for All Delivery Partners
In response to widespread criticism over its plans to introduce a ‘pure veg’ fleet, Zomato has announced a reversal of its decision. The company stated that all its delivery partners will continue to wear red uniforms, retracting the proposed introduction of green uniforms for those delivering food to vegetarians under the new service.
Zomato CEO, Deepinder Goyal, took to Twitter to convey the update, emphasizing that while they will still have a dedicated fleet for vegetarians, they have decided against segregating them on the ground with green uniforms. Instead, both regular and vegetarian fleet members will wear the same red uniform.
Goyal explained that customers opting for the ‘pure veg’ option can identify the ‘veg only’ fleet through the mobile app. This adjustment aims to prevent confusion and any potential safety concerns for delivery partners associated with non-vegetarian orders.
Acknowledging the feedback received from social media, Goyal expressed gratitude for bringing attention to the unintended consequences of the initial rollout. He assured users that Zomato is committed to listening to its customers and serving them effectively.
The announcement of the ‘pure veg’ service and the proposed color-coding system had sparked controversy on social media, with some users likening it to casteism and expressing concerns about its implications for non-vegetarian food orders and tenants.
Goyal had previously defended the introduction of the ‘pure veg’ service based on customer feedback, emphasizing the importance of catering to the dietary preferences of a significant portion of the Indian population. However, he clarified that the decision to segregate fleets was primarily to prevent food contamination issues.
In light of the backlash and social responsibility, Zomato has decided to maintain its red uniform policy for all delivery partners, irrespective of dietary preferences, religion, or caste. The company remains committed to addressing concerns and ensuring an inclusive dining experience for all customers.
