Indian Consulate Confirms Death, Vows Thorough Investigation
The Indian engineering student Mohammed Abdul Arfath, who went missing a few days ago in Ohio, United States, has been found dead in the Cleveland area. The “anguished” Indian Consulate confirmed this tragic news on Tuesday. They stated that they are in touch with local authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding Mohammed Abdul Arfath’s death and extend all possible assistance to his family.
11th Attack on Indian Students in 2024
Tragically, Mohammed Abdul Arfath’s death marks the second incident within a week and the 11th in a string of attacks involving Indian students in the United States in 2024 alone. The Indian Consulate expressed their deepest condolences to Mr. Arfath’s family and vowed to ensure a thorough investigation into his death.
Who Was Mohammed Abdul Arfath?
Hailing from Hyderabad, India
Mohammed Abdul Arfath hailed from Nacharam, Hyderabad, and had arrived in the US in May last year to pursue a Master’s in Information Technology from Cleveland University.
Last Contact and Missing Person’s Complaint
Arfath last spoke with his father on March 7th, after which his mobile phone was switched off. His roommates in the US had informed his family that they had filed a missing person’s complaint with the Cleveland Police.
Ransom Call and Threats
On March 19, Arfath’s family received a ransom call from an unidentified person, demanding USD 1,200 to “release” him. The caller also threatened to sell Mohammed Abdul Arfath’s kidneys if the ransom wasn’t paid.
Consulate’s Efforts and Cooperation with Authorities
Last month, the Consulate had stated that they were working with local law enforcement authorities to locate the Indian student. On April 9, they informed of the tragic news that his body has been found in Cleveland, US.
