  • Exact count of canceled flights is unclear.
  • The temperature in Leh has been predominantly high, often exceeding 30 degrees Celsius.
  • Elevated temperatures lead to operational challenges for aircraft, including those related to payload.

The elevated temperature at high altitude is affecting flight services to and from Leh, situated at nearly 10,700 feet above sea level.

Domestic airlines utilize A320 and B737 aircraft for flights to Leh airport, and some airlines have been canceling their scheduled flights recently due to high temperatures, as reported by industry representatives.

Information on the exact number of flights to Leh canceled on Tuesday could not be determined.

“IndiGo’s flight operations to and from Leh have been affected due to the high ambient air temperature in Leh, which is beyond the airline’s control,” an airline spokesperson stated.

The highest temperature at which an A320 Neo aircraft can operate is 33 degrees Celsius. If the temperature exceeds that level, the aircraft cannot be flown at that altitude, according to a senior Airbus pilot.

For Boeing 737 planes, the maximum operational temperature at Leh airport is 32 degrees Celsius, as noted by a SpiceJet representative.

The pilot mentioned that the maximum temperatures are determined by considering various operational factors, including an airport’s elevation and surrounding obstacles.

The Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh is situated at an altitude of 10,682 feet above sea level.
