Must read

Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni welcomed world leaders with a ‘namaste’ at the G7 Summit on Thursday. She greeted European Union leader Ursula von der Leyen with folded hands, a traditional Indian hello.

The G7 meeting is happening from June 13 to 15 at a fancy resort in Italy. Leaders will talk about the wars in Ukraine and Gaza.

Important people at the summit include:

  • US President Joe Biden
  • French President Emmanuel Macron
  • Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
  • UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak
  • Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also going to Italy for the meeting. He said, “I’m happy my first trip in my new term is to Italy for the G7.” Modi will talk about AI, energy, Africa, and the Mediterranean.

The G7 includes seven rich countries: US, UK, France, Italy, Germany, Canada, and Japan. Italy is in charge this year. They invited 11 other countries from Africa, South America, and the Indo-Pacific to join.

The European Union also comes to G7 meetings, even though it’s not a member.

This year’s big topics are:

  1. Protecting international rules
  2. Dealing with Russia’s attack on Ukraine
  3. Talking about Israel’s fight with Hamas
